There used to be an old custom in Spain of clapping for the Serrano. It made living in Spain one of the safest places to be. I heard about the Serrano form my grandmother who had lived in Spain in the late twenties. There was a Serrano on every block. A Serrano was a guard. He had the key to all the apartment buildings. When you wanted to get in you would clap two times and he was supposed to come. You would have to wait a few moments for him to get there. If he didn’t come you would have to look in one of the local bars to find him. This would only happen after 10 pm. Then you would tip him. The very astute Serrano would even give you a little candle to walk up the stairs. We used to tip one or two pesetas. It also kept a man from taking a girl up to the apartment or hotel or kept one from getting a goodnight kiss. The astute young man would have a master key made so they could open the door and kiss a girl good night. The Serrano knew everything that was happening on his block.SmELearn chinese in shanghai,Learn mandarin, Mandaringarden
